The Coseley Comets started in 1979, with Corp Director, Geoff Bailey. It was then named Bradley BB GB. They took park in all BB/GB competitions and got known to be the ones to beat! They started out coming last in their first ever competition - scoring 6 out of 40 for brass back then! This however did not knock any of them down - you can only improve and they did. Winning competitions over the UK it was time for a change for the band. They changed their name to 'The Comets' and started to tour around Europe becoming good friends with a German band in Bremen called Spielmanszug tura Bremen. They even went to Holland and Ireland. The band went from strength to strength winning everything their path - apart from finals. Could the band ever get over the final hurdle?
Geoff decided to retire from being corps director and handed the baton down to Andrew Dallison. Andrew drove the band again from strength to strength playing well known tunes from Disney, phantom of the opera and many more. Andrew then gave the baton onto Jayne Poole who had the most challenging target set. To get 30 members marching in 4 years. It was such a hard task because there was no younger generation within the band or coming up through the ranks. Jayne had 5 members!
Having 5 members was a struggle, getting through competitions but never once did we lose the fun and family aspect of the band. In 2007 seemed to be the turning point in out history. The band changed the name to 'The Coseley Comets' because we wanted Coseley to get spread around the UK. 2007 we played Frank Sinatra - it went ok considering we had such a young corps marching children that was only 8 years of age and never marched at all! We have the Junior division a good go and it showed because people started to recognise that The Comets were coming back!
Remember when we mentioned Jayne had a plan? To get 30 marching in 4 yours - well she did! In 2008 we marched 35 youngsters, Jayne did her target in 3 years! Truly a inspiration! The new band of The Comets MADE HISTORY for the FIRST time ever. We did the double - winning BOTH the league and finals. It really hit home that we made history, and did something the old band could never achieve! All credit goes out to the guys that marched that year young and old and to all the staff - without your determination and commitment the band would never have ever been reborn.
We got promoted into division and we are still there now! The talent has been so high the previous years and still is very strong. The band made our friends the last couple of seasons in welcoming Cadence to the black country! We enjoy socials and of course cheering each other on in competitions!
The band changed its name again last season to 'The Comets Performance Ensemble' to hopefully gain more interest to people who come and see us in and around our community. We have marched at The Birmingham International Tattoo for the last 2 years and hopefully there will be more to come. Last year the band introduced our little cadet corps and you can see all their news and details on the 'Cadet Corps' tab at the top.
